This year’s theme:

Quid sit futurum cras, fuge quaerere, et quem fors dierum cumque dabit, lucro appone.

 -Horace, Odes I.9

“Cease to inquire what the future has in store, and take as a gift whatever the day brings forth.”

Sorry for the delay on the blog!

I apologize for the delay in blogging and grading! When we first returned from the holidays the blogging part of my website wouldn’t work. Then I was out for 5 days for surgery, and I’ve been playing catch up since. We’ll have grades up and weekly blog posts from here on out.

Happy New Year!

To the Romans this would be the years 2766 AUC, or MMDCCLXVI AUC.

Here’s what’s going on:

  • Please tur n in National latin Exam money ASAP. If you don’t have it today, bring it in next Wednesday.
  • All classes will have quizzes on Friday, 1/18.
  • I will be out due to surgery from Thursday 1/10 through Tuesday 1/15. I hope that’s all the recovery time I’ll need.
  • Ms. Shaft will be your sub for the entire time I’m out. I know you’ll be really good for her.
  • You’ll be doing good, meaningful work (i.e., NOT BUSY WORK!) all 4 days

See you next Wednesday!

Wednesday October 24 will be Kell Toga Day! Here are the details:

  • The purposes of Roman Dressed for Success Day (Toga Day) are  to learn what is was like to be a Roman, let our school know that Latin is taught here, and that as long as we study it, Latin isn’t dead. In fact, it’s partying. Here are the details:

  • Wear a toga or stola on Wednesday, October 24 in all classes and you will receive a 6 out of 6 on a classwork/homework grade.
  • Be ready to educate anyone who asks about the clothing the Romans wore.
  • Have your teachers sign the confirmation sheet proving that you wore it in class in order to receive credit.
  • Confirmations must be turned in by the end of the day Thursday Oct. 25.
  • Tuesday AM and PM and Wednesday AM I will teach lessons on how to make a toga/stola.
  • Requirements:
    • YOU MUST WEAR A SHIRT AND SHORTS, JEANS OR SWEATS UNDER YOUR TOGA!!!!! No credit for ”Animal House” togas! You still must comply with the school dress code.
    • A solid color sheet
    • The toga must be worn. It can’t just be a sheet thrown over your shoulder.
    • a few safety pins (optional)
    • Girls should bring a belt or cord for their stolas.
    • Alternate assignment: a one page, single-spaced handwritten description of the clothing of Roman men, women, children and slaves. This assignment will receive the same credit as above.
    • Suggestions:
      • Dress up your toga or stola with a decorative border.
      • Wear a solid color tunic (t-shirt) in a coordinating color.
      • Create a corona of ivy to wear with your costume.
    • Have fun, but don’t distract your classes with your costume!
